Joshua's Story

Josh was a powerful presence – defined by kindness, humour, faith and a relentless pursuit of excellence. These qualities shaped the way he lived, competed and loved. Following a standout sporting performance, in July 2025, at just 14, Josh suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while playing a sport he loved. His passing left an unimaginable void, yet his impact reaches far beyond the field or court.

With his huge smile, respectful and considerate nature, Josh was well loved and known for genuinely caring for his family, friends, teammates and acquaintances. Whatever he set his mind to, he pursued with heart and determination. Football was one his great passions. He played with commitment and courage – a true competitor who lifted those around him and gave his all in every game.

In his honour, his parents, Taiye and Joe – both Canberra GPs, founded Josh4Hearts Foundation, promoting heart screening for young athletes and better emergency responses in sporting communities.

It’s time for change

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of sports and exercise related death in young athletes

“Young athletic individuals are the healthiest of us, but still carry a 1 in 300 chance of a potentially dangerous underlying heart condition” – A/Prof Hari Raju (MBChB, PhD, ECES, FRACP)
